It’s Summer Time
And June is Bustin’ Out All Over . . . Finally!
I should have done some of that hiding stuff because I have always found the term honeymoon to be the period between "I DO," and "YOU'D BETTER"! Geeeze, movin on . . .

June in History

It appears I had company, Napoléon began his trek to his Waterloo in June, and Nero fiddled around until zing went his final string. "Casey at the Bat" first appeared in The San Francisco Examiner on June 3, 1888. The first drive-in movie theater opened in Camden, New Jersey, in 1933 on June 6, and later, a day the will live in everyone's memories, D-Day was launched. Yo, did you know, that the 6th of June is also National Yo Yo Day?

Singer, actor Dean Martin . . . it was on June 17th that baby Dino Paul Crocetti was hatched. I have a special fondness for Dino, as he was one of the first real movie stars that I had the pleasure of meeting in Hollywood. It happened to be in June as well, that my first assignments on a movie set was handling wardrobe for the filming of, "The Sons of Katie Elder."

June 13 is National Juggling Day, and two days coming up are really important: June 14 is Flag Day in the United States.

June 17 is Father's Day, celebrated in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. It's time to express gratitude and appreciation for your favorite man, dear old Dad!

It's been said, Sonora Louise Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington was the Mother of Fathers Day! She decided that she wanted to set aside a special day to honor fathers. She arrived at this conclusion, after listening to a sermon at church on Mother's Day, in 1909. She thought it appropriate that dads who work and sacrifice, furnished love, security, and stability to a family be honored, as she wanted to honor her own father, William Jackson Smart, who had raised 6 children on his own after his wife died.

Sonora Dodd drew up a petition recommending adoption of a national Father's Day, and the Spokane Ministerial Association and the local YMCA supported it. Through Sonora Dodd's efforts, Spokane celebrated the first Father's Day on June 19, 1910. Over the years, many resolutions to make the day an official national holiday were introduced. Finally, in 1972, President Richard M. Nixon signed Father's Day into law. In the United States and Canada, Father's Day falls on the third Sunday in June. A fitting tribute indeed!

To finish off this great month: June 18 is International Picnic Day. Now that sounds like a great idea, doesn't it? And on June 22, 1847 the donut was invented, and on June 27 the song, "Happy Birthday to You" was first published, in 1893.

ENJOY your summer. Chef Carlo
